Hope Lutheran Church, located in West Jordan, Utah, is a confessional, liturgical, Lutheran church.  As Lutherans, we believe eternal life is a gift from God, received by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Advent is a season of preparation. This isn't the preparation of decorating and buying gifts, but is rather the sort of spiritual preparation of which the prophet Isaiah writes in the 40th chapter: "Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

The very last prophet whom God sent before His Son was John the Baptist, and John's message was one of repentance. Repentance was how God's people in the time of Christ were prepared to receive, and benefit from, their Savior, and it is how we prepare to celebrate and receive Christ today.

The season of Christmas is one of great joy. God has kept His long made, oft-repeated, promise to send the Messiah. But Advent is not Christmas. Advent leads up to Christmas. Advent is when we get ready for Christmas by focusing especially on the reason why we need Jesus to have been conceived and born for us as He was.

This is why the liturgical color for the season of Advent is purple, the same color as Lent. Like Lent, Advent is a penitential season. But we are not penitent, we do not despair, without hope. We know that there is hope, and that we have it in Christ. God bless you this Advent season as you join with God's Church in preparing to celebrate the birth of our Savior.
